Darrick Franklin: Memphis Athlete Channeling Doubt Into Drive

St. George’s Independent School in Memphis is home to one of the most versatile athletes in the city — Darrick Franklin. At 5’8” and 162 pounds, Franklin plays all over the field: quarterback, wide receiver, cornerback, and overall athlete, proving time and again that heart and skill beat size.

Despite a slow start in recruiting, Franklin remained focused. He showcased his abilities at the Memphis Mega Camp, where college coaches took notice. That persistence led to verbal offers from Tulane, Arkansas State, and Memphis, a turning point in his journey.

Franklin is part of a high school program that prioritizes team bonding and chemistry, a foundation built by head coach Tyler Rice, whose scheme-first, adaptable coaching style is helping Darrick thrive. Together, they’ve faced strong competition — including games against Germantown and Fayette Ware. Franklin is looking forward to matching up against top-tier private school opponents like Lausanne Collegiate and Evangelical Christian School (ECS).

His story starts much earlier than high school, though. Darrick began playing football at just 4 years old in a Cordova youth program, where he developed not only his athleticism but a deep love for the game. Now, as a high school standout, he embraces the full field — excelling on both offense and defense, and earning respect for his versatility and football IQ.

With the season opener against Collinwood (Division II-AA Private) on the horizon, Franklin is locked in. He plays with a chip on his shoulder, using doubt as motivation, and letting his work speak louder than the rankings.

Franklin credits his father, Darrick Franklin Sr., as his greatest inspiration. Sharing both a name and a bond through football, his dad has been a pillar of support throughout his journey.

Off the field, Darrick is a well-rounded young man. He enjoys fishing, working out, and spending time with family and friends. A true student of the game, he watches players like Dallan Hayden (Colorado), Xavier Worthy, and admires Justin Jefferson’s fearless demeanor on the field.

Football talent runs in the family. Franklin compares his athletic ability to his cousin, Will Redmond, a Mississippi State standout who was once in a QB battle with Dak Prescott before switching positions to cornerback. Redmond went on to play four seasons in the NFL with the San Francisco 49ers and Green Bay Packers.

For Darrick Franklin, football is more than just a sport — it’s a lifelong passion, a family tradition, and a personal mission. With every snap, he’s writing a story defined not by hype, but by heart.
