Standing at 6’6” and 245 pounds, Josh Simmons of Iona Prep High School (Class of 2027) is quickly emerging as one of the most promising defensive ends in the Northeast.
Simmons didn’t begin playing football until eighth grade, suiting up for New Rochelle Elite. His passion for the game was sparked by watching NFL and college football—especially his hometown New York Giants. “Watching Odell [Beckham Jr.] made me fall in love with the game,” he said. “At first, I wanted to be a wide receiver.”
That changed during his sophomore year, when coaches at Iona Prep transitioned him from tight end to defensive end—a move that unlocked his full potential. “I realized I could impact the game even more on the defensive side,” Simmons shared.
Under the leadership of Head Coach Joe Spagnolo, Simmons has thrived. “The program is great—one of the best around,” he said. “They run it like a college program and focus heavily on technique.” His position coach, Lou Birienzo, has also made a major impression. “He’s old school—gets in your face—but he’s one of the best coaches I’ve had. He understands offensive schemes and always puts us in position to make plays.”
Analysts and coaches have compared Simmons’ skill set to Dylan Stewart of South Carolina. Like Stewart, Simmons is twitchy, fast, and athletic, capable of holding his own in the run game while excelling as a certified pass rusher.
His recruiting process began to take off this fall, starting with offers from Dartmouth and Syracuse on October 10, followed by Boston College on the 15th, and Army on the 17th.
Despite the early attention, Simmons isn’t rushing his decision. “I feel like I have a decent amount of time,” he said. “I plan to make my choice in late spring or early summer.”
With his size, speed, and relentless drive, Josh Simmons is poised to be a name college recruiters—and opposing quarterbacks—won’t forget anytime soon.
