My first encounter with Makhi Jones came the summer before his junior year of high school. I was in Atlanta overnight on my way to Panama City, Florida, where I would be working alongside former NFL MVP Cam Newton. Coincidentally, Jones and I were staying at the same hotel, and by 5 a.m., I found myself dropping the teenager off to meet the former Heisman Trophy winner. At the time, I had no idea that brief car ride would help spark a turning point in my career.
As a high school standout, Jones played on what many consider two of the most dominant teams ever assembled at Milton High School. He was one of 13 players from that program to earn a Division I opportunity. Jones made an immediate impact at Duke, seeing significant playing time as a freshman and finishing the season with 35 tackles, one sack, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery for the Blue Devils.
Now, Jones begins a new chapter in Tallahassee. Reuniting with former 7-on-7 and high school teammate Shamar Arnoux, he’s set to bring energy and production to Florida State. Expect both to make their presence felt every Saturday.
