At just 5’10 and 170 pounds, running back Dionne Sims is proof that size doesn’t define dominance. With 4.4 speed, lightning-fast cuts, and shifty elusiveness, Sims has become one of Texas’ most dynamic young playmakers.

Sims began his football journey at just four years old in the Humble Area Football League, playing flag before moving to contact football at five. Now starring under Coach Cory Laxen, a first-year head coach known for his energy and passion, Sims credits him with transforming the culture of the program.

“Coach Laxen touches your spirit when he talks to you,” Sims said. “He makes you want to run through a wall for him. He’s the most motivational coach I’ve ever had.”

Offensively, Sims thrives in a system loaded with talent and creativity. The offense, he says, “has a lot of weapons,” and the offensive coordinator knows how to get everyone the ball in space—a system that plays perfectly into Sims’ explosive style.

When describing his game, Sims compares himself to Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs—a fitting comparison given his breakout speed, agility, and ability to make multiple defenders miss.

His recruitment process has been a whirlwind of opportunity and excitement. Sims has taken visits to the University of Houston, Texas State, Rice, and Stephen F. Austin. Recently, he made headlines by flipping his commitment from Stephen F. Austin to Rice University.

“Rice is considered the Harvard of the South,” Sims said. “I love how I fit into their offensive scheme, and it’s close to home—just 25 minutes away. It’s the perfect fit.”

Sims’ connection with Coach Johnathan Wilson played a major role in his decision. Wilson personally visited CE King High School to extend the offer and build a genuine relationship with the young back. During his official visit, Sims said the atmosphere at Rice sealed the deal.

“There was nothing but positive energy,” he recalled.

When asked what advice he would give to younger athletes chasing their dreams, Sims kept it simple but powerful:

“Trust your instincts. Don’t let anybody change the way you play.”

With his combination of speed, vision, and heart, Dionne Sims is poised to make a major impact at the next level—both on and off the field.
